With 79 days left until the 2026 FIFA World Cup, preparations are already underway across all 48 qualified teams, and the Ghana national football team is no different. March marks the start of that build-up, with international friendlies offering teams a chance to fine-tune tactics and assess squad depth.
Ghana has lined up four high-level test matches, in what is being seen as one of the most competitive pre-tournament schedules assembled by the Ghana Football Association in recent years.
The Black Stars will face the Austria national football team on Friday, March 27, 2026, before taking on the Germany national football team, the tournament co-hosts Mexico national football team, and Wales national football team.
There is also the possibility of a fifth friendly ahead of Ghana’s World Cup opener against the Panama national football team on June 17, 2026.
Focus first shifts to Austria, led by former Manchester United coach Ralf Rangnick. Friday’s encounter will be just the second meeting between the two sides. Their only previous clash, a friendly in March 2007, ended 1-1.
Ghana is yet to record a win over Austria, but the Black Stars have grown considerably since that last meeting, qualifying for multiple World Cups and cementing their place among Africa’s leading football nations. Austria, meanwhile, has developed into a disciplined and competitive European side.
Both teams booked their places at the 2026 tournament, which will be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. Ghana topped CAF Group I with eight wins, one draw, and one defeat, finishing with a +17 goal difference, while Austria progressed smoothly through the UEFA qualifiers.
The friendly presents a valuable test for both teams, pitting Ghana’s flair and physicality against Austria’s tactical structure.
Current Form and FIFA Rankings (as of early 2026)
- Ghana (Black Stars): Ranked 14th in Africa and 72nd globally. Ghana has shown strong form in the qualifiers with big wins. Such as the 5-0 win against the Central African Republic and the 1-0 win against Mali. Recent friendlies were mixed (losses to Japan and South Korea in late 2025). Coach Otto Addo is using this window to test squad depth.

- Austria (The Boys or The Team): In good qualifying form, including a 10-0 thrashing of San Marino and solid wins over Cyprus and Bosnia. Austria is well-organised under coach Ralf Rangnick, known for high pressing and structured play. They are ranked 24th globally and 12th in Europe.

Ghana’s recent qualifying dominance contrasts with Austria’s European consistency, making this a balanced test: African flair and physicality vs European tactical discipline.
Austria’s return to the World Cup is particularly significant. Since their last appearance in 1998, where they exited at the group stage, they have failed to qualify for five consecutive editions.
Their qualification for 2026 ends that long absence, and they are expected to approach both the tournament and their preparatory fixtures with renewed urgency, starting with the clash against Ghana.

As a result, they will be highly motivated to make an impact and push for a place in the latter stages of the competition.
That intent is expected to reflect in their approach to every preparatory fixture, starting with the friendly against the Black Stars of Ghana.
Key Squad Information
Ghana (26-man squad – Otto Addo): A mix of experience and fresh talent.
- Key returnees: Thomas Partey (midfield anchor), Alexander Djiku (defence), Iñaki Williams, Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Antoine Semenyo, Jordan Ayew, Kamaldeen Sulemana.
- Debutants/New faces: Derrick Luckassen, Patrick Pfeiffer, Marvin Senaya, Daniel Agyei.
- Goalkeepers: Lawrence Ati-Zigi (likely starter), Benjamin Asare, Joseph Anang. The squad blends Premier League/Bundesliga-based stars with home-based players for depth.

Austria (strong 26-28-man squad – Ralf Rangnick): Star-studded and experienced.
- Leaders: Captain David Alaba (if fit), Marcel Sabitzer, Marko Arnautovic, Konrad Laimer, Christoph Baumgartner, Stefan Posch.
- Newcomers: Carney Chukwuemeka and Paul Wanner add attacking creativity. Austria’s squad is largely Bundesliga and top European league-based, giving them familiarity with high-level football.

In terms of what to expect from the two countries, we can talk about:
- Ghana’s strengths: Pace on the wings (Abdul Fatawu Issahaku, Kamaldeen Sulemana, Antoine Semenyo, who has just won his first trophy with Manchester City in the Carabao Cup final against Arsenal), physical midfield presence (Thomas Partey, who has not had enough game time at the club side, Villareal), and clinical finishing from Jordan Ayew. They will look to counter-attack and exploit transitions.
One major positive for coach Otto Addo is having a player in his squad who has scored 17 goals and provided 5 assists this season across spells with Bournemouth and Manchester City, capping off a remarkable campaign with a Carabao Cup triumph.

Addo will be hoping to get the very best out of the Ghanaian forward, Antoine Semenyo, perhaps even needing a few tactical “cheat codes” from Pep Guardiola on how to unlock his full potential for the Black Stars.
This is because his club form stands in sharp contrast to his output at the club level, where he has managed just 3 goals in 32 appearances for Ghana.

All eyes will be on him to see how he performs for the Black Stars, starting with the March 27, 2026, friendly against Austria.
- Austria’s strengths: Compact defence, quick build-up play, and set-piece threat. Rangnick’s teams press intensely, which could trouble Ghana if they lose possession high up the pitch.
Ralf Rangnick was officially appointed head coach of the Austria national team on April 29, 2022. Having spent four years with the team, he has had ample time to implement his ideas and philosophy, shaping Austria into a well-structured side ahead of the 2026 World Cup.
This Austrian team can also boast of quality players in the set-up, not forgetting the experienced Marko Arnautovic, Vice Captain for the team, the most capped player, with 47 goals. He will be a big test for the defence of the Black Stars, given his experience and longevity with the national team.

- Tactical battle: Expect Austria to control possession at home, while Ghana sits compact and hits on the break, a classic Europe vs Africa friendly dynamic.
Prediction
A tightly contested affair is expected. Austria may hold a slight edge due to home advantage and familiarity with Rangnick’s system, but Ghana’s attacking talent makes them dangerous on the break. A 2-1 win for Austria or a hard-fought 1-1 draw looks plausible, though the real victory will be in the lessons learned and cohesion gained for both sides.
