The defence counsel for Aisha Huang, the Chinese lady standing trial for her involvement in illegal mining activities, together with the Attorney General’s Department, has rejected a proposed Chinese interpreter in the ongoing case.
Director of Public Prosecutions Yvonne Obuobisa argued on Wednesday July 12 that the interpreter, Yun Chin York, is a Chinese national who is a law student and may not be able to provide an accurate interpretation.
This was corroborated by the defence counsel led by Bernard Owiredu Donkor, prompting the judge, Justice Edward Ekow Baiden, to adjourn the case to July 21.
The judge also ordered the chief interpreter of the Judicial Service to provide another interpreter for the case by the next sitting.
Ms Huang, who operates with a gang comprising Gao Jin Cheng, 45, Lu Qi Jun, 39, Haibin Gao, 26, and Zhang Zhi Peng, 23, are standing trial with her accomplices for their involvement in illegal mining, popularly known as galamsey.
