The president’s nominee for Municipal Chief Executive for Asante Akim Central has failed again to secure the minimum two-thirds majority of votes to be endorsed as MCE for the area.
George Kyei Barfuor had 19 votes out of the 36 total valid votes cast while 17 voted against.
This left the nominee short of crucial votes to be confirmed as MCE.
The assembly members are yet to schedule another date for another round of elections.
The nominee had been earlier rejected following his nomination by president.
He was then re-nominated for the post which took place today, July 10, 2017.
The governing NPP supporters who besieged the election venue today at the municipal assembly jubilated over his failure to become MCE.
The NPP supporters who besieged the assembly told Accra FM’s Elisha Adarkwah that they did not want the nominee as their MCE and commended the assembly members for not confirming his appointment.
They, therefore, called on President Akufo-Addo to re-nominate different persons for the post.
The Ashanti regional Minister, Simon Osei Mensah, also expressed his disappointment with assembly members for not endorsing the nominee.
Before the elections, the nominee, George Kyei Barfour, had apologised to the assembly members to forgive him of whatever offence he had committed against them and confirm his nomination, but his pleas fell on deaf ears.
The election was supervised by the Ashanti regional minister, Simon Osei Mensah; the head of local government service, Dr Nana Ato Arthur; the Deputy Minister for Local Government, Collins Ntim, among other government personalities.
