The Artisans Association of Ghana (AAG) has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and his government to place its members on the national budget purposely for training.
“As an organisation or institution, we are looking forward to the government to [apportion] a special budget for artisans in the country as has been done for teachers and nurse trainees in Ghana,” AAG said in a press statement.
According to the association, “a number of literature has indicated that Ghana needs more refined artisans hence the need to train persons to be skilful in their activities”.
The association said it has over 33,000 members nationwide and is, therefore, expecting the government to allocate a budget for artisan training in order to reduce the unemployment canker in the country.
The statement said there had been a number of attempts by past governments to help the youth but no direct benefit had been attained by organised artisans.
AAG added that allocating a budget for artisanal training will produce good craftsmen to prevent the country’s dependence on expatriates for technical assistance.
