The Gunners believe the midfielder put up a good show, despite the Pharaohs’ defeat to the Indomitable Lions at Stade de l’Amitié
Arsenal have praised Mohammed Elneny’s efforts despite Egypt squandering a goal lead to lose 2-1 to Cameroon in the Africa Cup of Nations final in Sunday.
The 24-year-old got the curtain to put the Pharaohs up inside 22 minutes, but goals from Nicolas N’Koulou and Vincent Aboubakar’s condemned denied them the top prize.
And despite the north Africans’ second place finish in the tournament, the Emirates Stadium outfit remained proud of the midfielder in spite of the disappointment.
”It just wasn’t meant to be for Mo and Egypt tonight. We’re proud of your efforts, @ElNennyM,’’ the club tweeted.
Elneny’s return to the Emirates Stadium will be a huge relief for Arsene Wenger, whose side crashed 3-1 to Chelsea on Saturday.
With Aaron Ramsey and Santi Cazorla injured, plus Granit Xhaka suspended, the Gunners are a bit short in the middle as they continue their chase for the English Premier League crown.
Arsenal, fourth on the EPL log with 47 points will host Hull City to north London in their net game on February 11.
