The Ashanti Regional Security Council (REGSEC) has instituted strong security measures to drastically reduce robbery cases in the region, Regional Minister Simon Osei-Mensah, has said.
According to him, the government of Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has the security of the country as one of its topmost priorities as way of not risking the lives of the people. He, however, failed to make those security details public for fear that it will arm the miscreants.
Speaking in an interview with Adehye FM on Tuesday 21 March, Mr Osei-Mensah said: “The government has policies and programmes for the region and the first on the list is security. We have general security where people are able to sleep or travel at any time of the day without fear of robbery attacks.
“The Regional Security Council will collaborate with other security agencies to provide top security in order to clamp down on robbers. We cannot totally remove robbery cases in the region and, to a large extent, the country. It is not possible; however, we can reduce the cases drastically.”
He also revealed that plans were underway to deal with the Fulani menace confronting the people of the region.
He said: “There is also the issue of the Fulani herdsmen who sometimes turn to be armed robbers themselves, killing people and raping innocent women. Inasmuch as we need their cattle, there is the need to also ensure that they do not pose a security threat to anybody, and so there have been measures put in place to handle them.”
