The Ashanti regional police command says it has commenced investigations into the case of illegal miners who were trapped in a mining pit after it caved in at Petriensa, a town near Konongo in the Asante Akim Central municipality of the Ashanti Region.
Confirming the incident to media at a press conference on Tuesday July 25, 2017, the regional police commander, DCOP Ken Yeboah, while refuting earlier reports that 11 persons were trapped in the mining pit, said those buried were four.
“The police quickly went to the scene and those found trapped in the pit were Abdul Mumuni, 30; Alhasan Fusani, 25; Malam Yelpie,32; and one unidentified young man,” he said.
He said Abdul Mumuni and Alhasan Fuseni, who survived, are currently on admission at Steward Hospital receiving treatment.
Malam Yelpie and other unidentified persons believed to be in their late 20s, he said, were found dead in the pit and their bodies have been deposited at Steward Hospital and First Klass Hospital mortuaries respectively awaiting autopsy.
