The Ashanti Regional Division of the Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD) of the Ghana Police Service has vowed to clamp down on tricycle operators who flout road traffic regulations.
Personnel from the department have impounded about 137 tricycles after their owners were caught flouting traffic regulations.
The exercise, which began on Monday, January 10, was carried out at Suame, Tafo, Asokwa, and Alabar.
Ashanti Regional MTTD Commander Superintendent Enoch Abrokwah said arrested drivers would be processed for court.
“As a matter of fact, these tricycles are not to carry passengers; they are not to be used for commercial activities, so to speak, the law does not allow that. Riders are supposed to wear helmets and are not supposed to jump red lights, but these are essentially what they are doing,” he said.
According to him, police decided to embark on the operation to sensitise the public and riders. He further noted: “Most of them too do not have riding licences and that is why we are putting them before court to serve as deterrent to others.”
He said the operation would continue until the objectives to ensure road discipline to reduce accidents have been achieved.
