Police in the Ashanti Region have killed two armed robbers after one of the suspects exchanged fire with law enforcement officers.
At a press conference on Tuesday August 16, Deputy Ashanti Regional Police Commander, ACP Ampofo Duku, explained that on the dawn of the same day, four young men wielding guns laid ambush at the entrance of one Nasiru Gulet’s house at Asokore Mampong and attacked him immediately he entered the house.
He refused to hand over his bag to them despite forceful demands by the robbers. They shot him in the palm and succeeded in robbing him of GHS 35,000 and bolted amidst indiscriminate firing of gunshots.
“Police intelligence later revealed that the robbery was conducted by one Emmanuel Nyamekye, alias 50 Cent; Kwadwo Asare, alias Lumba; Yaw Gyimah, alias Scorpion; and Isaac Ofosuhene,” the police disclosed.
The law enforcement officers later identified and arrested Yaw Gyimah, who confessed to the crime. He led the police to the arrest of Ofosuhene and upon interrogation, the two informed the police that they had planned with Emmanual Nyamkye, Kwadwo Asare (now deceased) and one other person named ‘Area’, who is now at large, to rob Rees Hotel near the Baba Yara Sports Stadium.
The two deceased persons were subsequently lured to Asafo. When police officers attempted to arrest them, one of them aimed a shot at one officer but missed. When police returned fire, 50 Cent and Lumba were hit, resulting in their instant death. Suspects Yaw Gyimah and Issac Ofosuhene have been detained to assist investigations.
Meanwhile, the police have also arrested 34 other suspects in the region during a swoop in Bantama and around the Asafo Interchange in Kumasi.
The arrested suspects are to be screened by the police in connection with various crimes committed in the region over the past few months.
Security Analyst David Agbe described the development as worrying but said it was a good thing the police were alert and doing their job.
Mr Agbe told Naa Dedei Tettey on 12Live on Class91.3FM in an interview that it was important the police were proactive, especially as the December elections approached, in order to forestall any mishaps and also boost confidence in the citizenry.
