Officials from the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO) in the Ashanti Region have begun an exercise to dredge the Aboabo drains and adjoining ones to allow for free flow of water during downpours.
The Aboabo drain is noted for flooding during the wet season.
Flood waters have been a major source of worry for residents living in the area who are usually victims whenever it rains.
Perennial flooding in the area has resulted in the loss of lives and destruction of properties whenever the drains overflow mostly in the rainy season.
The Ashanti regional coordinator of NADMO, Kwabena Senkyire, who is leading the dredging exercise, told Class News it had become necessary following the damage the perennial flooding has caused in the area.
Some residents who also spoke with Class News questioned government’s commitment in addressing the cause of flooding in the area.
According to them, the dredging may be an exercise in futility if government fails to reconstruct the bridges across the drain.
