Managers at the Kumasi Landfill site have blamed the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) for the poor management of the facility.
J. Stanley Owusu Company Limited, the contractor in charge of the facility, said the assembly had not paid monies owed it in nine years, hence their inability to properly manage the place.
This came to light when the mayor of Kumasi, Osei Assibey Antwi, visited the facility on Friday 21 April as part of his pledge to address the sanitation situation in the city.
Ashanti regional manager for the company, Francis Owusu Marshall, said the KMA’s indebtedness had affected the smooth operation of the facility.
The facility, which is a destination for both solid and liquid waste from the Kumasi metropolis, has been bedevilled with numerous challenges.
Residents living close to the facility have constantly accused the management of failing to disinfect the dumpsite and directing liquid waste into a nearby stream in the community.
They also complained about the invasion of their homes by reptiles and how the facility had turned into a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
Aggrieved residents from four communities who could not contend with the health risk the site was posing to their lives protested against the poor management of the facility in 2016.
