Police in the Ashanti Region have begun interrogating two women believed to be supporters of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) for their role in a forceful takeover of a school feeding programme at a school in Kumasi.
Perpetual Asare Owusu, 42, and Akosua Owusua, 54, were arrested by officers at the Kumasi Central Police Station after they had stormed the Sokoban Methodist Primary School with macho men to stop caterers from cooking for pupils.
The incident, which nearly turned chaotic, forced the caterers in charge of the programme to lodge a complaint at the police station for the arrest of the two persons.
The latest incident brings to seven the number of takeover cases in the region since the NPP won the 2016 elections.
Ashanti Regional Police Public Relations Officer ASP Mohammed Tanko confirmed the arrest to Class News on Friday, January 27.
“We had complaints this morning from one Nana Yaa Boakyewaa and Hanna Darko, who are operators of the [National] School Feeding Programme at Sokoban that some women came to warn them the previous day to leave their job so that they will come and take over today (Friday, Jan 27). They did not take it seriously and today they were there when the ladies came back. They did not know what to do and they reported to us and quickly we went to apprehend the two women involved,” he narrated.
He indicated that the police want to “interrogate the women and find out why they went there and with what authorisation”.
