The former midfielder says the Pharaohs now have every chance to qualify to their first World Cup since 1990
Former Ghana captain Stephen Appiah believes Egypt are now favourites to qualify from Group E to the 2018 World Cup after handing the Black Stars a 2-0 defeat in Alexandria on Sunday.
The Black Stars could only manage a goalless draw with Uganda last month in Tamale in the opening group game and fell to the Pharaohs for the second time in three years, leaving them five points behind Egypt in third place.
“This is football and anything can happen but we have to be sincere to ourselves. This qualifier is very difficult for Ghana,” Appiah told Citi FM.
“The only way we can qualify is if Egypt decide that they don’t want to go the World Cup again and slow down in the remaining matches.
“This is because it’s very difficult but we have to wait and see but it looks very uncertain for us now. Egypt have the chance to qualify,” he added.
In the other group game, Congo failed to pick their first point after Farouq Miya’s solitary goal gave Uganda 1-0 win at the Namboole Stadium in Kampala. The Cranes are second with four points.
The Black Stars will host Congo in August 2017 in the next game but the defeat to Egypt is likely to be Avram Grant’s last time in charge of Ghana’s World Cup qualifiers since his contract runs out in February.
