President John Dramani Mahama and the Flagbearer of the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, have both been engaged in last minute campaigning for their respective candidates in Tuesday’s by-election in the Amenfi West Constituency of the Western Region.
The seat become vacant following the death of the NDC MP, John Gyetuah.
President John Dramani Mahama who addressed a rally at Asankragua, said the achievement of the government is evident enough for the people to see, hence the need for them to vote for the party’s candidate.
“On Tuesday, you will be going to the polls again. You are going to elect a Member of Parliament in this by-election. We in the NDC have chosen Eric Afful to continue with the good works of the late MP John Gyatua. I have introduced him to the majority leader to approve him because I am confident that he will win this by-election. He is already in Parliament because I know that you the people of Amenfi West will vote massively for him. I believe that you will give him the nod to continue with the good works of the late MP,” he told the crowd.
Nana Addo, who also addressed NPP supporters in the area, told them that the NDC has failed Ghanaians and does not deserve to win the seat.
“If you believe that there is going to be a Ghana where there are a lot of employment opportunities for the youth where there is total development, where there are policies that inure to the benefit of all, then I charge you to be committed to getting the NPP and Paul Derkye to come to power.”
Nana Addo added that “the work which has already begun must be accomplished on Tuesday in the by-election. We are the only party to get Ghana going again.”
He further urged polling station executives for his party to be vigilante and ensure that the process was transparent. “This will go a long way to ensure a free and fair election on Tuesday. We want our victory to be a clean one so that Ghanaians will know that change is coming. All Ghanaians must know that indeed the NPP is bringing the much awaited change,” Nana Addo added. The NDC’s candidate for Tuesday’s poll is 41-year old Eric Afful, who works with a local cocoa buying company in the constituency. The NPP is represented by Paul Derkyi, a 43-year old lawyer. The others are Mr. Abraham Kwadwo Buadee, a 41-year-old accountant for the Progressive Peoples Party (PPP), and Mr. Elvis Adjei, a 30-year-old Loan administrator for the United Front Party (UFP). The Amenfi West seat has traditionally been an NDC seat. The party has occupied it since 2,000 with four different candidates. With the exception of the years 2000 and 2004, when the NPP came close to winning, the NDC in 2008 and 2012 stretched the vote margins considerably.
