The findings of an assessment of road networks in the Accra Metropolitan Assembly (AMA) done by Bloomberg Philanthropies Initiative, a non-governmental organisation, have been presented to the Mayor of Accra, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije.
Accra was selected to be part of a global network initiative to save lives and protect citizens from road traffic accidents.
Mr Vanderpuije, speaking in an interview with Class91.3FM’s Paa Kwesi Parker-Wilson on Tuesday August 23, when the findings were being presented, said: “We also have to support the police in bringing education to the motorists and to the public. We at Urban Roads [Department] have to make sure that the signage, the required knowledge about what level of speed must be maintained, is also demonstrated on our roads. The police are being supported with gadgets and whatever it is so that they can determine the speed at which motorists are driving.”
“So many things have to be in place but I am also calling on the police that we should go about that initiative on our roads so that it is not based on assumptions but based on realities. We can’t say that any aspect of the police’s work is irrelevant. Every aspect of the police’s work is important but when we are talking about road safety, it is important that we make sure that we hold motorists responsible and that is what I am asking the police to do, that we hold motorists responsible when they break the law.”
When asked if the AMA would have the financial muscle to implement the findings and recommendations, the Mayor said: “I don’t believe that money is the issue; with the right initiative and commitment, the resources will come.”
