Teacher trainees across the country on Thursday 2 March celebrated after Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta announced the restoration of allowances for students of colleges of education and public health training institutions in the country, Isaac Wiafe, spokesperson of the Teacher Trainees Association of Ghana (TTAG), has said.
The Akufo-Addo-led government has budgeted GHS252million to restore teacher and nurse trainee allowances beginning September this year.
The allowances were scrapped by the erstwhile John Dramani Mahama administration, incurring the displeasure of the teacher and nurse trainees.
President Akufo-Addo promised to restore the allowances if elected into office.
Presenting the maiden budget statement of the new government, Mr Ofori-Atta noted that 49,032 teacher trainees across the 43 public colleges of education and 69,707 nurse trainees would benefit.
Speaking in an interview with Accra News’ Nana Ama Agyarko on Friday 3 March, Mr Tawiah said: “We are very happy at government’s restoration of the allowance. We have really suffered under the previous government when the then president cancelled the payment of the allowance. As we speak, teacher trainees are popping champagne in celebration of the announcement yesterday.
“All we need now is that the government should give us further and better particulars on the mode of payment and when it will start.”
