Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo is not suffering from any of the health conditions the Africawatch magazine published about him recently, the opposition leader’s personal physician, Dr Yaw Adu-Gyamfi, has said.
The Africawatch magazine in its August edition reported that the three-time flag bearer of the NPP was battling acute kidney injury, heart enlargement, and prostate cancer.
Mr Akufo-Addo described the report as an attempt by his opponents to sully his image ahead of the December 7 elections.
But Dr Adu-Gyamfi, speaking in an interview on Multi TV’s Newsfile on Saturday September 3, said: “He (Akufo-Addo) doesn’t have any cancer. [If he did], he would not be able to run around as he is doing.
“The [Africawatch] article goes on to say he has acute kidney injury. When you have acute renal failure, it means you are unable to pass urine.”
He explained that persons with renal damage usually undergo dialysis to rid the blood of accumulated impurities, saying should such a condition arise, patients are either unable to pass urine or do so in dribs and drabs.
Dr Adu-Gyamfi added that the condition also places restrictions on the kinds of food the patient consumes including meat, but said “Nana Addo eats anything, drinks water wherever he goes, eats anything that is put before him”.
The medical doctor added that Mr Akufo-Addo “cannot have any kidney problem”.
On the issue of heart enlargement, Dr Adu-Gyamfi said: “…When it (the heart) is failing, it means the muscles are getting weak, therefore, it’s unable to pump enough blood into the system. Therefore, you can’t engage in any activity, can’t go to bed easily. [But] here is a man who goes about campaigning. The way he is moving about engaging with people, sometimes dancing with the crowd, he cannot have any heart disease.”
