President Akufo-Addo has expressed confidence in Guinean president Alpha Condé and wished him well in his new role as Chairman of the African Union (AU).
Mr Condé was elected at the 28th AU Ordinary Summit in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, following the end of Chadian President Idris Deby’s term on Monday.
In his vote of thanks on Tuesday, January 31, at the end of the summit, Mr Akufo-Addo said: “The elements are in place for the successful tenure of office of President Alpha Condé, and we wish him well.”
He explained that the Assembly has conferred a new Bureau, composed of some of the “most redoubtable figures” of contemporary African politics, which includes their Excellencies Yoweri Museveni, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, King Mswati III, and Idriss Déby Itno.
Mr Akufo-Addo said with a new Commission led by “Foreign Minister of Chad, with an equally accomplished Ghanaian diplomat as his Deputy and a new set of apparently solid Commissioners”, AU is well positioned to arrive at the goal of realising a vision of an integrated, peaceful and prosperous Africa, speaking with one voice, that has been the dream of successive generations of pan-Africanists.
