The Ayew brothers powered Ghana into the semi-finals of the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations with a goal each in a 2-1 victory over DR Congo on Sunday January 29.
Jordan Ayew broke the deadlock in the second half but had the goal cancelled by Mpoku from a long range strike before his big brother converted a spot kick to give the Ghanaians a semi-final date with Cameroon.
Congo should have scored the first goal of the match after Congolese captain Mbokani pounced on a faulty header from Afful to goalie Razak Braimah. Mbokani dribbled Braimah but his feeble shot hit the post instead.
Mbokani again missed two great chances in the 37th and 39th minutes, shooting wide on both occasions.
Wakaso Mubarak came close to scoring for Ghana from a free kick in the 50th minute but Congolese goalie Matampi saved with his foot after the ball bounced awkwardly in front of him.
Jordan Ayew, a minute later, should have gotten a penalty when he beat two defenders before being brought down in the box by Mpoku, but the referee was not interested.
Jordan Ayew hit the back of the net in the 63rd minute after beating two defenders and slotting home with a right foot to give the Black Stars the opener.
Five minutes later, Mpoku out of nothing cancelled the lead with a long range strike that curled away from the outstretched arms of Braimah.
Ghana restored their lead from a spot kick after Christian Atsu was brought down in the penalty box by Lomalisa. Andre Ayew, who captained the side in the absence of the injured Asamoah Gyan, sent the goalkeeper the wrong way to give Ghana the second goal.
Braimah kept Ghana alive when he pulled a great save from a Bakambu long range shot with only four minutes left on the clock. Atsu came close to making it three for the Ghanaians but his close range shot in the box was beautifully saved by the Congolese goalie.
Ghana, making its sixth successive semi-final appearance at the AFCON, will face Cameroon on Thursday 2 February.
