Black Stars captain Asamoah Gyan has said it is unsettling Ghana have not won the Africa Cup of Nations for the past 35 years although the team can boast of quality players over the years.
Gyan, who is playing in his sixth Nations Cup, told Class Sports’ Kwame Dwomoh-Agyemang in Gabon that he was worried about the situation.
“Personally, I do worry a lot and as of now, I’m leading the team and it’s quiet frustrating having this kind of quality players and not taking anything home. It’s frustrating but we will try and make sure we carry the cup home, although it’s very early to talk about winning the cup because we have a long way to go. We just have to be more composed to do what we do best, that is, win games and we’ll see what happens,” he stated.
Gyan said there was pressure on the team to satisfy Ghanaians by winning the trophy at the ongoing Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon.
“There is pressure on us because over 35 years, people back home are expecting the cup. We the players…we know what is at stake so the pressure is there but sometimes pressure brings the best out of you and that is what we are trying to do,” he noted.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and former president John Dramani Mahama have all urged the team to this time round win the trophy at the ongoing competition in Gabon.
The Black Stars have been finalists nine times, winning the trophy on four occasions – 1963, 1965, 1978, and 1982 – while missing out on the ultimate in 1968, 1970, 1992, 2010, and 2015.
