The Africa Centre for Energy Policy (ACEP) has welcomed the decision by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to merge the Power and Petroleum Ministries.
According to the Director of Policy and Research at ACEP, Dr Ishmael Ackah, the merger will help in ensuring that the challenges in the energy sector of the economy are given critical attention.
On Tuesday January 10, President Akufo-Addo announced the decision to bring the two ministries together to fall under the Ministry of Energy. According to him, the separation of the two ministries did not make sense.
While announcing his ministers-designate on Tuesday January 10, he said: “We are putting back the Petroleum and Power [Ministries]. In my view, the separation doesn’t make sense, so we can have one person at the top of all the various institutions to have a bird’s eye view to ensure the efficiency and the development that we want.”
Speaking in relation to the decision in an interview with Accra News on Wednesday Dr Ackah said: “It (merger) will help. You recall that under Prof Mills’ administration we had one ministry in charge of energy, with one minister and two deputies, but Mr Mahama came to separate it.
“The time has come for us to merge it and get a competent person to head it. We have the experts, all that we need is money to ensure the work is done.”
