Commuters and weekend shoppers using the main National Theatre road to reach the main city centre have had to endure some inconvenience on Saturday, July 15 as most were forced to use alternative routes to reach the commercial district.
This was as a result of the closure of the road to allow for repair works on a major water pipeline.
In a statement, the Ghana Water Company Limited had said: “A 12-inch diameter steel pipeline located in the dual carriage road near the National Theatre is weak and corroded.”
The GWCL further indicated that barring any predicaments the works should be completed on or before Sunday, July 16.
The works involve replacement of the corroded pipeline that serves areas including the Ministries, Makola, parts of Ridge, Accra Sports Stadium, Osu Kuku Hill, and surrounding areas.
Class FM’s Mercy Obeng Akrofi who visited the scene explained that the traffic build-up was clearing and “the corroded pipes have been replaced and the hole has been covered”.
She said engineers were hopeful that the works would be completed by the close of day and the road open to motorists.
