The much-awaited Ablekuma South Constituency primary of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) finally came off yesterday after several postponements.
After the long electoral exercise, full of anxiety, incumbent chairman, MacDonald Okai, managed to retain his position, polling 341 votes as against his contenders, Nii Odarlai Bruce, who secured 263 of the total votes cast and Henry Addy, garnering 20 votes.
The closely fought race for the position of first vice chairman ended with Emmanuel Addo carrying the day with a slim margin of 254 votes, with Emmanuel Sowah getting 249 votes and Kwaku Adu trailing them with 123 votes.
Former Greater Accra Regional Youth Organiser, Pius Obodai Torto, who was considered an underdog in the contest for the position of second vice chairman, pulled a major surprise by securing 206 of the total votes cast whiles his closest contender, Frank Otoo, secured 158 votes and the likes of Gaeten Dery, John Akoto and John Quarcoo taking home 154, 65 and 39 votes respectively.
In the case of the organiser position, former assembly member for the Korle Gonno Electoral Area, Abel Banini, won with 225 votes whiles his closest rival, Collins Asante, who had been highly tipped to win the position, came up with 218 votes. Sarfo Adu Amankwah, Gameli Ofori, Lovingsam Crabbe and Gilbert Tetteh followed with 56, 50, 42 and 34 votes respectively.
The secretary position went to Ibrahim Baako with 217 of the valid votes cast; followed by Martin Mensah, 185 and Albert Hanson, 144, whiles Emmanuel Odartey and Ekow Beecham only managed to get 53 and 22 votes respectively.
The faceoff between Isaac Kotey and Juliana Cudjoe for the position of treasurer ended with the former taking the day with 364 votes whiles the latter had 261.
Same happened in the straight fight between Frederick McAnkrah and Joseph Sackey for the assistant secretary position, which ended with the former going home with 367 votes as against the 250 secured by the latter.
Catherine Owusu-Sekyere retained her position as women’s organiser with 263 votes while her main contender, Norberta Acquah, came close with 244 votes and Rosemary Lamptey only managing 115.
The hot race for the youth organiser position was won by Hayford Annor with 242 votes. His closest contender was Stanley Cubagee, who secured 206 votes, with Benjamin Asante managing to take home 116. Joseph Gyasi Boako had only 58 votes.
By the close of day, the close contest for the position of Nasara coordinator between Nii Dattreh Sackey and Awal Mohammed, ended up with Nii Dattreh beating Awal to the game with 392 votes as against the 226 votes he secured.
