The Management of Aayalolo Transport Services will start punishing drivers of other commercial vehicles who use the dedicated lanes for the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT), Fred Chidi, Director of Communications of the company, has revealed.
According to him, those lanes were created exclusively for Aayalolo buses, hence unauthorised vehicles found to be using those lanes would be punished severely.
The service, which involves special Aayalolo buses on dedicated lanes for fast movement within urban settlements, started in November 2016.
The vehicles ply the Accra-Amasaman, Accra-Ofankor, Accra-Adentan, Accra-Tema and Accra-Kasoa routes.
However, management of the service has observed that other unauthorised vehicles have been using those special lanes, a situation which is against the road safety regulations.
Speaking in an interview on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM on Wednesday April 26, Mr Chidi said: “We will start punishing the drivers who use the dedicated lanes. First of all we will clamp your car, then tow your vehicle to the police and fine you.
“In Nigeria they have introduced stringent measures to check unauthorised vehicles from using the dedicated lanes. They used to whip them, but these days a more acceptable measure has been introduced to deal with them.
“We take the dedicated lanes very seriously because it helps in our work.”
