Minister of Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, has revealed that about 91 per cent of road accidents in Ghana are as a result of avoidable mistakes on the parts of drivers.
According to him, most drivers ignore road safety regulations especially when driving on highways, a situation he said causes most of the accidents on some of the good roads in the country.
His comments come in the wake of recent road accidents in some parts of the country including the one that killed singer Ebony and two others, as well as the one that occurred at Tantra Hill in Accra involving a 207 Benz bus in the early hours of Tuesday, 13 February 2018, killing eight persons.
Mr Amoako-Atta told Obeng Mensah on the Ghana Yensom show on Accra 100.5FM on Thursday, 15 February 2018 that: “We need to look at the human factor in this whole accident menace. We acknowledge that most of the roads are defective and we are working on it but all the drivers must take safety measures seriously.
“We need to check our tyres, avoid wrong overtaking, and avoid driving tired because these lead to the accidents.”
He added: “I have a report in my office at the moment which indicates that about 91 per cent of the road accidents are caused by human errors and most of them occur on some of the good roads.
“On the bad roads, the drivers drive slowly, the nature of the road serves as a natural caution to the users, that doesn’t mean we prefer bad roads.”
