Embattled General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party Kwabena Agyepong has resigned
PRESS STATEMENT
RESIGNATION AS GENERAL SECRETARY OF THE NEW PATRIOTIC PARTY
The past few days have been very tumultuous and I have taken some time to think about my political career and the fortunes of the New Patriotic Party, a party I have dedicated my life to serving. My campaign to be General Secretary of this great Party was built on togetherness and selfless service to the Party. I sought to encourage the spirit of volunteerism, which was very much alive during my days as a young patriot. Many will recall that my campaign resorted to pertinent slogans such as “Think Victory, Think Kwabena” and “Together, We Shall Rise Again.”
Indeed, when the delegates of my Party confirmed the trust they had in me at the Congress held in Tamale in April 2014, I was motivated that a day had arrived in the Party. I was confident that the general elections in 2016 will be won by the New Patriotic Party, and I still hold that conviction. I was determined to rally, together, those who supported me and those who did not support me. To that end, I organized a thanksgiving service and lunch, and invited all members in the Party. I believed that my colleagues shared the same passion for victory that I did.
I therefore hit the ground running and restructured the administration of the Party’s Headquarters. I instilled professionalism in the way we conducted our politics and encouraged our communicators to speak in a decorous manner when addressing the public. I successfully organized the most peaceful presidential primaries that our Party has seen, and under my leadership, the Party retained the best candidate to win the general elections in 2016.
I met our newly elected presidential candidate shortly after the presidential primaries and assured him of my unflinching support and commitment to the 2016 project. We shared ideas on how best to unite the Party for the imminent victory. Sadly, members of the Party have continuously sought to undermine each and every step I have taken in furtherance of the 2016 project. I have been humiliated, insulted, vilified and painted in a very unappealing light in the eyes of the public.
It is extremely heart-breaking and deterring to learn that my own colleagues take to the media to belittle the General Secretary of their own Party. I do not regret any decision I have taken since I was elected as General Secretary as all decisions have been in the interest of the Party. However, I cannot continue to serve the Party in my capacity as General Secretary.
By this statement, I hereby inform the Party and the general public that I have resigned as the General Secretary of the Party. This morning, I sent my formal resignation letter to the National Council of the Party. I, however, remain committed to serving the Party in my individual capacity as a member and it is my hope and prayer that we win the 2016 general elections to alleviate the economic hardship inflicted on Ghanaians by the incompetent and corrupt John Mahama Administration.
Thank you!
God bless the NPP. God bless Ghana.
