If care is not taken, the 2020 presidential and parliamentary elections will be chaotic, a former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces, Brigadier Joseph Nunoo-Mensah (rtd.), has said.
According to him, the violence that characterised the just-ended by-election in the Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency on Thursday, 31 January 2019 is a harbinger for the 2020 elections.
Heavily-armed National Security operatives shot and wounded several members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at the private residence of the NDC’s candidate about an hour into the by-election at the La-Bawaleshie area.
A lot of civil society organisations including President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo have called on the security agencies to act swiftly and investigate the matter and bring the perpetrators to book.
Speaking on Ghana Yensom on Accra100.5FM hosted by Kwabena Prah Jnr (The Don) on Monday, 4 February 2019, Brigadier Nunoo-Mensah said: “I saw the development on television and I was amazed. I think if we are not careful, the 2020 elections will be disastrous for us all.
“Now former President Mahama has said the NDC will retaliate and that sends a signal to the country about where the elections in 2020 will be heading.”
He added: “The youth of this country must resist the tension from the NPP and the NDC to safeguard the peace of the country.”
