Stay away from our demo – Organised Labour warns political parties
Organised Labour has warned political parties whose intent is to capitalize on their upcoming demonstration to stay away from infiltrating their protest march on Wednesday, January 20. The group in a statement indicated that the demonstration will specifically be organised for workers and not political parties. “We would like to emphasize that the demonstration is for workers. We therefore advise all political parties to stay away from the demonstration,” a statement issued by the group said. The much anticipated protest is to register displeasure about what Organised Labour has described as astronomical increases in taxes which have shot up the prices of petroleum products. The demonstration is also to protest against the refusal of government to reduce the recent increases in utility tariffs. “We assure all working people of Ghana that all is set for a peaceful nationwide demonstration to express our outrage with the insensitive increases in taxes, levies and utility tariffs. All workers in both formal and informal sectors are expected to participate fully in the demonstration.” In Accra, the demonstration will start from Obra Spot near the Kwame Nkrumah Circle at 7: 30 am prompt.
The routes for the demonstration in the regional capitals will be announced by Organised Labour in the various regions. Organised Labour has held several meetings to get government to reduce the taxes but to no avail. They have threatened a nationwide strike after the demonstration. Both the demonstration and the strike, are expected to have an adverse effect on the public as many government institutions and agencies will not be working.
