Although the Akufo-Addo-led government has intentions of continuing with projects started by the previous government, contracts found to be questionably awarded or without regard for value for money will be discontinued, Kwasi Amoako-Atta, Minister for Roads and Highways, has said.
According to him, it would be fair that only contracts properly awarded are continued in order to save the nation hard-earned cash.
Speaking in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of Ghana Yensom, on Accra100.5FM on Wednesday February 8, Mr Amoako-Atta said he would meet with officials of the Ministry of Roads and Highways and all agencies under the ministry to look into contracts and other documents available as a way of finding out whether value for money was factored into the award of such projects.
He said: “The principle of state policy in the constitution indicates that every government that comes should continue with the projects commenced by the previous government. Failing to continue with the good projects started by the previous government is not a mark of good governance and that is not what the people of Ghana are looking for.
“We will continue with every project that is not questionable, but of course if we realise some of these projects will not serve the interest of Ghana or it will not inure to the benefit of Ghana, we will discontinue them.
“I must stress that any project or contract that was properly awarded through the Public Procurement Law would be continued. As we speak now I don’t have any evidence of contracts that were not duly awarded in the road sector. Officially, I am starting work today February 8 as minister. I have set something in motion. Within the next 10 days I will meet with all the directors at the ministry and the directors of the agencies under the ministry on the contracts and other documents I have seen so far.
“We are now going to look into all those documents. It is after this that I will know the actual state of our road networks and every other thing associated with the sector.”
