The Black Maidens of Ghana on Tuesday October 4, kept their hopes of advancing to the next stage of the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s Championships in Jordan alive when they came back from a goal down to beat the United States of America 2-1.
The Maidens started on a poor note and went down early in the first half from some bad defending.
However, they turned the game around, mounted pressure on the American team, but were unable to fetch the equaliser in the first 45 minutes.
Shortly after recess, Gifty Acheampong headed home to even the score for Ghana in the 63rd minute after the American goalkeeper failed to deal with a cross from the left.
Skipper Sandra Owusu Ansah got the match winner with only eight minutes to the end of regulation time from a well converted spot kick after an American defender handled the ball in the box.
The win leaves Ghana on three points going into their last group game against Paraguay. A win against the South Americans will see the Maidens qualify to the next stage of the competition after losing their opener to Japan by five goals to nothing.
