President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has launched a new national identification card called the Ghana Card with a call on the National Identification Authority (NIA) to protect data gathered at all times.
The new ID card will phase out the one previously issued in the John Agyekum Kufour era.
“My presence at today’s event, together with the Vice President of the Republic, highlights the seriousness which my government attaches to the national identification system. The NPP government under my leadership has not only prioritised the NIA, but also demonstrated commitment to making the NIA work again. That is why I press to provide the NIA the requisite support to perform its functions effectively,” Nana Akufo-Addo said at the launch on Friday, 15 September.
“The National Identification Authority is ready to provide Ghanaians with a modern robust national identification system and a smart ID card that will meet the modern aspirations of the people of Ghana and carry us into the future,” NIA Executive Director, Professor Ken Agyemang Attefuah, said at a news briefing in Accra earlier.
The nationwide registration of Ghanaian citizens for the new ID card will now start following the launch. It will begin with persons from the security agencies, schools and banks.
The Central, Western and Brong Ahafo regions will follow suit before other regions.
Ghanaians living abroad can also acquire the card at a price.
The new identification card has 14 international security features.
Nana Akufo-Addo also inaugurated and swore in an eight-member governing board of the NIA, including Executive Secretary, Professor Ken Attafuah.
