Mohammed Kudus will have a new manager at Ajax after the Dutch champions fired Alfred Schreuder following Thursday’s 1-1 draw with Volendam, in which the Ghana international came off the bench to score.
A late goal by Kudus saved a point for Ajax, but it extended their winless streak to seven games, leading to the sacking of the former Barcelona assistant coach.
Schreuder took over at the club after Erik ten Hag left for Manchester United last year.
“This is a painful decision, but it’s necessary,” said Ajax chief executive Edwin van der Sar.
“Regardless of the good start to the season, we lost a lot of unnecessary points. The football itself was precarious too.”
“We gave Alfred our time and trust to change the way things were going. It became clear to us that he could not change the tide,” added Van der Sar.
“Regardless of the many transfers that took place, we consider the squad fit for a championship. We lost a lot of points over the last few weeks and sadly saw a lack of progression.”
Kudus was unhappy with Schreuder at the start of the season because the Dutch limited his playing time. The midfielder attempted to force a move to the Premier League, with Everton rumoured to be his destination.
However, things improved before the World Cup, with Kudus becoming a regular and scoring nine goals. Thursday’s goal was his 10th of the season.
