The two per cent reduction in the Special Petroleum Tax is woefully inadequate, Robert Sabbah, Vice President of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union (GPRTU), has said.
According to him, the reduction is “a drop of water in the ocean”, a situation that will not solve problems of drivers.
The reduction comes days after COPEC-Ghana embarked on a street protest against the rampant hike in petroleum prices.
Parliament on Thursday, 15 February 2018, passed the Special Petroleum Tax Amendment Bill to reduce the tax from 15 per cent to 13 per cent.
But speaking on this development in an interview with Chief Jerry Forson, host of the Ghana Yebsom show on Accra 100.5FM on Friday, 16 February 2018, Mr Sabbah, said : “It is just like a drop of water in the ocean, it is insignificant.
“The reduction is good but the percentage is insignificant. The impact will not be felt that much. We expected that at least GHS5 will be reduced not this one.”
Similarly, some drivers have expressed disappointment over the reduction.
Yaw Barima, spokesperson for the True Drivers Union, told host Forson that: “We have seen that the president does not respect Ghanaians over the percentage. We see that the president wants to knock the heads of drivers and passengers.
“This reduction is not significant yet passengers will expect that we reduce the transport fares. This reduction is an insult to Ghanaians.”
